国立科学博物館のミュージアムショップにて メリコイドドン の化石を購入したので、カッコよく飾る方法を考えた結果、化石をレプリカに埋め込む方法を思いつきました。そのためには、化石をデジタル化して、同原産同属の完全に近い頭骨を見つけて、そして、化石の形に頭骨レプリカを削り出す必要があります。今回は3Dプリンターを使って出力してはめ込む様子を紹介します。
Having purchased a Melicoidodon fossil from the museum store at the National Museum of Nature and Science, I thought of a cool way to display it and came up with the idea of embedding the fossil in a replica. To do this, I would need to digitize the fossil, find a near-perfect skull of the same native genus, and then carve a skull replica in the shape of the fossil. In this article, I will show you how I used a 3D printer to output and fit it in.
メリコイドドン の化石をはめ込めるように3Dプリンターで出力したのが下の画像です。色は化石を目立たせるため単色で仕上げました。
The image below is a 3D printer output to fit the fossil of Melicoidodon. The color was monochromatic to make the fossil stand out.
そして、化石をはめ込んだ様子が下の画像です。化石がぴったりとはまる様子が良い感じですよね。部分的な化石でもレプリカと組み合わせると、完ぺきに近い化石を手に入れたかのような満足感！
And the image below shows how the fossil is inserted. The way the fossil fits perfectly is a nice touch, isn’t it? When you combine even a partial fossil with a replica, you feel satisfied as if you have a near-perfect fossil!
今回は メリコイドドン のレプリカで化石を飾ってみましたが、今後は他の化石でも工夫して飾ってみると、より楽しい化石の楽しみ方ができるかもしれないですね。
This time we decorated the fossil with a replica of Melicoidodon, but in the future, we may be able to enjoy fossils more if we try to display them with other fossils in a creative way.
